Conversation 023 – Dealing with Toxic People

This conversation is between me(Seeker 2) and my friend(Seeker 1) on how do we deal with toxic people – the people who bring in negative reactions, negative emotions and negative energy through their dealings.

Seeker 2: They say we keep learning lessons till the last minute of our life and how true!

Seeker 1: True…Cent percent! It always puzzled me why only good people suffer…

Seeker 2: If you think it is suffering then it is suffering…it’s just the mindset…according to me it is evaluation of people in circumstances for our self-improvement. It is only between I and I!

Seeker 1: What you are saying is correct in one way. Still these days I am seeing this a lot. You do things that’s morally correct but still  hell a lot of trouble awaits you. But people indulging in all sorts of incorrect/immoral activities are leading better lives and suffer less!

Seeker 2: That’s why I said it is the mindset of people involved. Most of the time even the family is hostile to a person who lost earning capability. Where does the person go then?

Seeker 2: Inner strength and self-belief is the key in such situation. That’s why scriptures like Srimad Bhagavatham holds the key. They can have a very positive effect while dealing with adverse circumstances.

Seeker 1: “Inner strength is the key in such situation” – I agree on this.

Seeker 2: The sad thing is these things can happen to anyone. But no one realise that!

Seeker 1: But inner strength alas is not everyone’s cup of tea!

Seeker 2: When adverse things do happen, they breakdown!

Seeker 2: To be sober and not to overact when things are better is the key. Equanimity is a very good quality to cultivate!

Seeker 1: So true…

Seeker 2: A person is able to handle and tolerate adverse situations because he understands that there are lot of inner meanings the toxic people do not understand.

Seeker 2: Toxic people are highly materialistic and think just money is all in all and everything revolves around money. They acquire money by hook or crook but they do not realise there is a lot of negative karma they are accumulating by trying to inflict negative reactions among others!

Seeker 1: This is the mentality of every normal person…except for a few enlightened ones…

Seeker 2: So we have to identify and talk to only those who are sensible!

Seeker 1: yes..indeed!

Seeker 2: And for others, we have to just let them do whatever they want and just ignore their dealings, otherwise we will lose our valuable energy –  the energy we need to spend for useful pursuits!

Seeker 2: We are not going to gain or lose anything by their gimmicks!

Seeker 1: YES!

To conclude, i am reminded of this amazing couplet from the great tamil poet Thiruvalluvar:

குறள் 314:

இன்னாசெய் தாரை ஒறுத்தல் அவர்நாண

நன்னயஞ் செய்து விடல்

Couplet No.314:

The (proper) punishment to those who have done evil (to you), is to put them to shame by showing them kindness, in return and to forget both the evil and the good done on both sides.

P.S: Those who belong to the human being category will realise their folly otherwise even God cannot save them!

  1. I like your reference to toxic people. Indeed, there are such people. We need to eliminate their effects upon us. It is easier to do that if we recognise their inner demons. They may be hurting themselves. They may just be unenlightened, placing blame etc onto others because of their own shortcomings. Dealing with it is hard. But we have to have the in er strength to do it, interesting thoughts in your writing here. Thankyou for directing mebtowards it

        1. Yes I do understand but with browsers like Microsoft Edge (If you use laptop) you will be still able to listen to the browser contents. I regularly use this feature because i am too lazy to read! Someone needs to setup speech though.
