May I?

O my lord, O best of the givers of benediction, if you will kindly grant me the benediction I desire, please let me not meet death from any of the living entities created by you. Grant me that I not die within any residence or outside any residence, during the daytime or at night, nor on the ground or in the sky. Grant me that my death not be brought by any being other than those created by you, nor by any weapon, nor by any human being or animal. Grant me that I not meet death from any entity, living or non-living. Grant me, further, that I not be killed by any demigod or demon or by any great snake from the lower planets. Since no one can kill you in the battlefield, you have no competitor. Therefore, grant me the benediction that I too may have no rival. Give me sole lordship over all the living entities and presiding deities, and give me all the glories obtained by that position. Furthermore, give me all the mystic powers attained by long austerities and the practice of yoga, for these cannot be lost at any time.” – Srimad Bhagavatham 7.3.35-38

If we don’t want to realise the purpose of life as a human being and indulge in everything else other this, we are inferior to even demons whose only purpose in their life is sense gratification. The above verse is from Srimad Bhagavatham where Hiranyakasipu, the king of the demons, on performing long austerities to Lord Brahma asks for the above benedictions thinking himself over-smart only to be put to dust later by Lord Narasimhadeva, the magnificent incarnation of The Supreme Personality of Godhead – Lord Shri Krishna/Lord Vishnu.

This prayer/poem “May I” is an inspiration based on the above benedictions by Hiranyakasipu in order to understand what is our actual position and what should be our real aspiration. “May I” is dedicated to Lord Narasimhadeva, the man-lion incarnation.

May I!

May I beg Lord Shri Krishna that I forever be under His protection and fully surrendered to him!

May these transgressions from spiritual pursuits to be realised only for the time being till I am absolved of my family responsibilities and obligations!

May I able to quit family life then and forever be under Your mercy and protection O Shri Krishna!

May I always live with minimalistic needs while all the time involve myself in chanting your Holy names, reading, writing and listening about You and Your pastimes!

May I quit this body at Your will, while being forever remain surrendered to You life after life!

May this soul always be at Your mercy, so there is no reason to ask for any benediction from You!

May whatever be the condition You put to this soul Please let me always remember You because without your remembrance this soul just cannot exist!

May I beg You to make me remain as a dust under Your lotus feet since I don’t know to perform any austerities properly nor I know to interpret you properly. All I know is You only!

May I forever be under the shelter of your pure devotees and by fully surrendered to them to solicit their company to continuously chant Your names and Your Holy pastimes!

May I not want any palatable food that kindles the taste buds that drag me into the mode of passion and ignorance. I also don’t want anything else that will make me forget You!

May I not sleep at all because it will make me forget You and to chant Your Holy names all the time – Hare Krishna Mahamantra, Vishnu Sahasranamam and all glorious prayers written for You by Your devotees – prayers that are worthy to be sung!

May I always sing Your prayers describing Your insignia – Sudarshan chakra conch club sword bow etc which are non-different from You!

May I always sing prayers about your glorious incarnations matsya kurma varaha Narasimha Vamana Parasurama Rama Balarama Krishna Kalki which are non-different from you!

May I always sing prayers about your consorts who are your internal potencies – Goddess Maha Lakshmi,  Srimati Radharani and so on!

May I forget hunger, thirst, family relationships and whatever material assets you have given me that will anyway leave me at the time of quitting this body which is only a bag that is constantly emitting foul substances but still wants to enjoy these impermanent things called material nature!

May I always remember You because You only are the object and objective worth remembering!

May I always remember you because You are the only one who is eternal – existing before the creation, during the creation, during the sustenance, during the annihilation and also after the annihilation You only remain!

May I always be surrendered to You without any inhibitions or any expectations!

May I always remain surrendered to You and be under Your protection seeking absolutely nothing from anyone or anything else!

May I always continue to remain in this mindset of being fully surrendered to You under any situation that may be imposed because of karma!

May this commitment of being fully surrendered to you never ever waver no matter what, irrespective of whatever tribulations that I may be put in!

May this act of surrendering to you unconditionally be the only permanent thing in my mind!

May I beg you to accept my Surrender to you – this insignificant soul – and resolve me of all the sins and harms that I have committed to myself and to any living being either willingly or unwillingly!

May I sincerely seek Your forgiveness and beg You to accept my surrender and that I face all the eventualities that will arise out of my foolishness wholeheartedly and make sure I do not commit the same foolishness again!

Finally, please accept my surrender and make me do everything for You without expectation of any reward and make me do everything ONLY for the satisfaction to you!

And by surrendering to You unconditionally Please let your unsurmountable illusory energy Maya not act on me for without wholehearted surrender to Your Lotus feet, this is just not possible!

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare!

The logic of the mouse and the snake!

“The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Vishnu said: O demigods, fulfilling one’s own interests is so important that one may even have to make a truce with one’s enemies. For the sake of one’s self-interest, one has to act according to the logic of the snake and the mouse.”Srimad Bhagavatham – 8.6.20

What is this “logic of the snake and the mouse” and why this had to be invoked by the master of masters of all Acharyas, Lord Vishnu to the devas?

Surely, this has got to be the master of master of all raja-tantras or political brilliance of the highest standard to outwit the most strong and formidable opponent!

This advice was given to the devas by the Supreme Lord Vishnu because of a curse incurred to King of heaven, Indra from the mouth of angry sage Durvasa due to an act of negligence by Indra.

The strength of the devas reduced drastically and the demons/asuras taking full advantage of it defeated the devas and took the control of the entire universe.

The devas, having been driven out of their own residence, approached the supreme father of material universe Lord Brahma for help, who in turn approached his father, Supreme Lord Vishnu and offered prayers for assistance.

Lord Vishnu mentioned churning the milk ocean to produce nectar that would make them immortal is the only solution.

He asked them to sign a truce with the demons following “the logic of the mouse and the snake” because a massive physical labour is required to undertake this task and because the demons are in the rajasic mode of nature (Mode of Passion), they are very suitable for this purpose…

Thus the concept of signing an armistice with an ultimate enemy to achieve the ultimate purpose outwitting and utilise the resources of the enemy to achieve one’s own mission is the logic of the mouse and the snake

The logic (story) goes like this:

  1. Once a snake got into an earthen pot and was relaxing in it.
  2. A naughty but very clever mouse running around the pot jumped and fell into the pot accidentally and in the process closed the lid.
  3. Now both the mouse and the snake got caught inside the pot.
  4. The mouse got terribly afraid of the snake and pleaded not to eat It., mouse being natural food for the snake.
  5. The mouse said to the snake: “Both of us are now trapped inside this pot and so we both of us will be captured and killed!”
  6. The mouse continued: “If you will not eat me now, I have a plan by which both of us can overcome this danger and get out of this pot!”
  7. The snake thought: “I am anyway going to outwit this mouse and will eat it when I am out of this pot. So for the time-being, let me agree to this mouse’s proposal and cooperate with him to get out of this imminent danger.”
  8. The snake said to the mouse: “Let it be so!”
  9. The mouse said: “Okay. Sit tall and raise your hood so that I can climb and sit on top of it. And remember this: You should close your eyes and not open it till I say so, Otherwise this plan will not work out and we will continue to be trapped inside the pot!”
  10. Since the snake also wanted to make a desperate escape, it had no other alternative.
  11. The mouse, very happy, having convinced the snake about his plan, climbed to the top of the snake and sat on it and situated itself close to the lid.
  12. The mouse said to the snake: “Thank you very much for your cooperation. Just close your eyes for about 10 seconds and both of us will be done!””
  13. The snake said: “Okay, make it fast. We don’t have much time left!”
  14. The mouse with all his strength, jumped high, able to pierce the lid and escape to the outside world through that hole and started to run towards its hole as fast as possible.
  15. The snake opened his eyes and was happy to notice the hole, also escaped from the pot.
  16. The snake now thought about catching that mouse for prey, watched it running at a distance and started to chase it.
  17. By the time, this realisation came to the snake, the mouse was fast enough to reach its safe haven!
  18. The snake standing outside the rat hole said to the mouse: “Can you please come out of this rat hole for a minute? I want to thank you very much for what you have done to me and I have a gift for you!”
  19. The mouse said to the snake: “I very much know your plan. We are natural enemies and I am sure if I come out now, you will surely eat me because we are in our natural environment now. I only asked your assistance inside the pot because I was in dual danger that time. One was yourself and the other the owner of the pot who is sure to kill me when he find me inside. It’s only out of providence that my plan also provided the escape route for you! That truce is now over and we both are now back to our natural habitat.”
  20. The snake realised this mouse is too smart for him and so decided to let him go to search for a different prey.

The devas thus executed this plan to perfection in the Samudra Mandhan (Churning of Milk Ocean for Nectar) described in the 8th Canto of Srimad Bhagavatham to regain their lost glory.

Having been asked to accept to whatever be the demands made by the demons during the churning process by the Supreme Lord Vishnu – from the start of the churning process – to accept the tail portion of the snake Vasuki (since tail was considered inauspicious and head auspicious according to the demons) and leave the head to the demons to accede to the various outputs during the churning process like Vāruṇī, the lotus-eyed goddess who controls drunkards, a horse named Uccaiḥśravā, which was as white as the moon etc. to the demons.

The devas clearly realised that it is the final product of churning – the nectar – is what they ultimately want and the intermediate products are just transformations and hence there is not much value associated with them.

So they are happy to let them go, but when the jug of nectar was snatched by the demons from the hands of Dhavanthari, the expansion of Lord Vishnu as God of Medicine, the devas became morose.

The Supreme Lord Vishnu, to fulfil His promise, appeared as Mohini-murti incarnation, bewildered the demons by creating a quarrel among them, retrieved the nectar from the demons and distributed the entire nectar to the devas.

This entire episode – “the logic of the snake and the mouse” or the churning of the milk ocean for nectar by devas and asuras is best summarised by these last two verses of Srimad Bhagavatham in Canto 8: Chapter 9 – The Lord Incarnates as Mohinī-Mūrti.

The place, the time, the cause, the purpose, the activity and the ambition were all the same for both the demigods and the demons, but the demigods achieved one result and the demons another. Because the demigods are always under the shelter of the dust of the Lord’s lotus feet, they could very easily drink the nectar and get its result. The demons, however, not having sought shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord, were unable to achieve the result they desired.” – Srimad Bhagavatham 8.9.28

In human society there are various activities performed for the protection of one’s wealth and life by one’s words, one’s mind and one’s actions, but they are all performed for one’s personal or extended sense gratification with reference to the body. All these activities are baffled because of being separate from devotional service. But when the same activities are performed for the satisfaction of the Lord, the beneficial results are distributed to everyone, just as water poured on the root of a tree is distributed throughout the entire tree.” – Srimad Bhagavatham 8.9.29

Conversation 053 – At The Crossroads?

Seeker 2: Hi! Very good evening…How had been the day without any interference from me 🙂

Seeker 1: Very good evening to you too 🙂

Seeker 1: I had a word with our common friend on what I need to do to go to the next level on my career. I am surely at my crossroads in my career at this point of time!

Seeker 1: I am thinking that I don’t stand any chance outside because a lot of things I have to do and I think time is crucial now day by day!

Seeker 2: The cheap strategies of these corporates demotivating people in this regard to such an extent that the employees simply resign their fate to themselves and live in disillusionment while the corporates continue to mint money using these hapless people!

Seeker 2: I guess that’s what you are also feeling at this point of time.

Seeker 1: Yeah, pretty much agreeing.

Seeker 2: its only in your thought process that you think that you don’t stand any chance outside! It’s not the fact…you stand a lot of chance compared to the general folks who really don’t know what they are up to and they are only very pleased with all the nonsense that they are doing!

Seeker 2: It’s only for them that there is no chance out. They are doomed when one day they will be shown the door by the employer. After participating in all the useless activities all the time…that will be their only gain and then they will because the laughing stock of the same management that encourages all these activities for their entertainment 🙂 …and then they will curse themselves at that point of time but that is really of no use!

Seeker 1: Can understand…Hmm. Certainly!

Seeker 2: I have seen lot of such people crying to me at the last moment and after their dismissal.

Seeker 1: (expressionless)

Seeker 2: I just say to them it is too late and you should have talked to me much before. This is reality and you yourself must have witnessed several of them over these years.

Seeker 1: Yes. I can see. I don’t know what to do…

Seeker 2: You are there as long as you work like a donkey or a jackass and in one fine day they don’t want your skills you are shown no mercy and shown the door and asked to quit almost the same day!

Seeker 1: Yes, correct. Time is slipping away 😦 I can understand your concern.

Seeker 2: I tell you, still there is a lot of time left for you. Focus more on the core skills the market requires and try to lessen the time for these mundane tasks you are doing day in and day out.

Seeker 2: You have a strong leadership quality. Super communication skills…never say die attitude…what else you want?

Seeker 1: Confidence. 😦 I am lacking! I also have to remove laziness.

Seeker 2: I  mean when the purpose strongly sticks to your mind, laziness with automatically go away…you have so much available time to listen or read something, watch recorded webinars…check latest trends etc.

Seeker 1: Yes.

Seeker 2: Confidence is only in the mindset…when you think about all these strengths of yours it will automatically come!

Seeker 1: I am kind of feared with failures!

Seeker 2: You will definitely face setbacks in your pursuits but that doesn’t mean it is going to happen all the time unless you have the will to drop it and go for the next. You just have to wait for a single thing to click…when that happens all the previous setbacks are long gone 🙂

Seeker 2: I mean I don’t have to tell these small things to you. You already know it. It’s only the work environment that alters the mindset and blocks the thinking process.

Seeker 1: Yes. I know.

Seeker 2: The fear that if I lose the job I will lose my salary. If I lose my salary what will I do. That must be weighing on the mind because of the false insecurities that has been built around you.

Seeker 1: Yes. It is all liabilities to sustain a lifestyle!

Seeker 2: I don’t want you to take my case as an example because that would only lead me to think that I am something great but I am not!

Seeker 2: I don’t want anyone to take my examples and the bloody risks I have taken in my life and also put others to risks.

Seeker 1: Hmmm.

Seeker 2: I have my own principles and I could not compromise in this disguised world.

Seeker 1: Hmm.

Seeker 2: If it is only for money I would have been a totally different person by now. I put my career at risks by trying to help people out of the way and had quit lucrative salary and positions just to be in this “pathetic” state, as people around me say, that I am now. But I am not. I am quite happy with the way I am leading my life with a certain dignity.

Seeker 2: For all these I have been only subject to ridicule, even from people in the family for my inability to earn large amounts of money that they need to spend for useless purposes 🙂

Seeker 1: (sad)

Seeker 2: I know everybody assumes their problems and issues are great compared to what others are facing and that is because of something called false ego that is built into our consciousness. That’s why I never discuss my things to anyone only to counteract from them that they face much greater stuff!

Seeker 1: Correct. I surely can understand.

Seeker 2: God provides troubles, sufferings and problems only according to the level that people can withstand and counteract and nothing more than that. That’s why everyone’s situation is unique 🙂 I am building the respect for everyone only on the basis of these concepts.

Seeker 2: All human beings are born to suffer no matter where they are, who they are, how they are. and why they are That is the fact of life!

Seeker 2: If you have the will to focus on your problems and attempt for solutions, solutions will automatically come your way. It is only a matter of time.

Seeker 2: The effort itself is more rewarding than the ultimate result 🙂

Seeker 1: I guess so. That is true.

Seeker 2: Instead of putting blame on the surroundings which are totally imaginary and unreal, it is only our wrong perceptions of the actual reality that is the root cause of all our problems.

Seeker 1: Yeah, very true.

Seeker 2: I mean I can only talk of these kind of deep philosophies to only those who can introspect and take things at a serious and a higher level.

Seeker 2: I hope I can only be a catalyst trying to kindle the fire already there in you.

Seeker 2: This is only for those people who can understand what I am saying…otherwise it will only go as a conversation in my blog for whoever to pick it up and take it 🙂

Seeker 2: I speak to our common friend at this level…I speak to everyone who has something in them at this level…otherwise I don’t speak to people who are too casual in their approach and often do not realize the purpose of why they are living 😦 and I am always ready to help in whatever way I can should you have anything to ask.

Seeker 2: Just ponder about what I have been mentioning today and take whatever that makes sense to you at your discretion 🙂

Seeker 2: It’s only the dusty mirror that distorts even your own face and when you wipe it with a clean cloth everything becomes clear 🙂

Seeker 2: Similarly when the mind is covered with illusory thoughts, everything appears deluded but that is not the reality…there is a clear truth to everything…if the doubts that has arisen out of illusion is eradicated with right knowledge…

Seeker 2: Okay…please try to reflect on these things. And surely you find a way out of the doubts on your capabilities or capacities you may be having. We can talk on this further if you require…

Seeker 2: Good night.

Conversation 050 – Essence of Gita

I am touching 50 conversations through this post.

Gratitude and acknowledgments to all for your constant encouragement and support for me.

Pink Floyd – Brain Damage

Here it is:

Seeker 2: Good morning. Hope you are not busy now 🙂

Seeker 1: Good morning!

Seeker 2: How are you doing today?

Seeker 1: I am not well these days. My eyes are paining a lot…

Seeker 2: ohhh! You couldn’t get much sleep for sure…

Seeker 1: This issue is on-off these days. So this is not the main thing. But I am disturbed mentally.

Seeker 2: Did you find time to share it with whom you think you can?

Seeker 1: Nope, I never share these things with anyone.

Seeker 2: Then to whom will you share and solve this recurring problem? Do you have any close friends or someone to whom you can talk personally F2F?

Seeker 1: This is also another problem with me, as I just said I don’t share my personal issues with anyone.

Seeker 2: This is something serious…You have to please sort this out with the help of someone. This will never go by itself for sure and you also can’t solve this 😦 Please with the help of any close friend do something about it. I am too far away from you to help you other than having these conversations…

Seeker 1: It’s fine. No issues.

Seeker 2: Sorry it’s not. I am really surprised you are not saying any of your issues to anyone. Sure you are not living in an island alone like Alexander Selkirk or Sindbad the sailor 😦 Someone must be supposedly there to help you…

Seeker 1: No no I can never share my things with anyone because I never shared anything nor with anyone. So I can’t!

Seeker 2: I am really concerned about this because I know what this can lead to at some point of time unless something is done. I know you are having these kind of issues ever since I know you. There is no solution on its own for this…that’s why I am really worried.

Seeker 2: We are the kind of people who can’t pretend to exist just like others…we are so much connected to our inner self and look at every chance for self-improvement…more often that hurts…and it hurt our inner selves…and when we keep everything to ourselves it magnifies. It blows out of proportions…it makes us contrary to think and never tend to think realistically!

Seeker 2: We expect the world to be so ideal so faultless that everyone gets their fair share but it is not…when we are younger it strikes us hard. It makes us a rebel and when we find no one to accept our words we direct it to our inner self and get into a big turmoil…and once we grow older and when we are lucky we tends to accepts this as reality…and utilizes the bad world to our advantage to develop our inner self…for our self-improvement…

Seeker 2: We restrain to ourselves…we don’t feel the need to talk to anyone or accept their opinion…we just get self-satisfied…but unfortunately you are really too young at this point of time to come to that level of realization…

Seeker 2: I am not saying you don’t have any level of realization…I am just saying that the realization to realize whatever is happening outside is no way connected with me…to affect my moods…my thoughts. My actions…so that I don’t inflict damage on myself mentally or physically…this realization doesn’t come so easily. It take time. It involves lot of pain…lot of things to assimilate to get this ingrained to our minds.

Seeker 2: I am sure you are getting what I am trying to say…sitting here I can only do this much because I really want you to come out of this…get to do what you like…and find peace and contentment at the end of the day…I haven’t spoken this depth of philosophy to anyone in my life besides you, because no one accepted me as well at any point of time and my mindset to the way I want them to accept or the way I expected as I accepted them with my intent and mindset…

Seeker 2: I also don’t want to give advice to you because of your current mindset…I know you are an extremely self-confident person to have come to this level that you are now…and I also know don’t like advice…you always want to face everything boldly on your own and overcome it. So if I start sermonizing, I don’t think it will get to you…I just want you to try something, to think in a different way…I know your work environment is like a pressure cooker…

Seeker 2: These people should have some counselors at their disposal because they put everyone to a lot of mental stress with their work culture and environment…so that people can be free to meet them when they have these issues and at least have an opportunity to share with them…but they won’t do it…instead they would divert the stupid workforce with some stupid “extra” activities…

Seeker 1: How you are able to say these deep things so easily, so casually, so coherently with the choice and flow of words I could never even think of?

Seeker 2: Because unfortunately I also don’t have a normal mind 🙂 I am living in a pathetic family environment and an equally pathetic inconsiderate environment(s) for years…you have to come and see for yourself! 🙂 J

Seeker 1: Yeah!!!

Seeker 2: Life teaches us a lot of lessons if we treat it as our best teacher! If we learn from the lessons and utilize it to move ahead towards the higher purpose of life. At one point you will find it no longer sensible to become getting distressed because distress is the fundamental fact of life. If people are not distressed it is because they are superficial and very shallow in thinking, their entertainment habits, their food habits etc. in other words they don’t have any control over their senses, or bluntly you can say, they are slaves of their own senses! They only want to live in for the moment. They are happy only for immediate sense satisfactions just like animals. God has uselessly provided brains for them because they treat it just like a lump of matter without putting it to any sensible use. If you realize that you are beyond them…I definitely know you are…You will not get that much mentally disturbed. I advise you to please spend some time and start reading Gita at least for 15 minutes every day…any random page you want from the scripture. You will definitely realize what I am talking now to you is making some sense.

Seeker 1: I don’t have Gita. I’ll get it someday.

Seeker 2: Please order the book right away…as soon as possible. The so called folks who claim themselves as “humans” cannot provide solution to humane problems. Only Krishna can. I will order it for you and send it to your address.

Seeker 1: No no I’ll buy it.

Seeker 2: I will also get some punyam for my after-life (merit) by doing this!

Seeker 1: Don’t worry…

Seeker 2: No, please I insist. No yaar (friend) I am not worrying I am only concerned about you…

Seeker 1: Ok I ll order it now.

Seeker 2: Even if you don’t find time to read if you just keep the book with you, I promise you will see positive change happening in your life.

Seeker 1: ohhh!!!!

Seeker 2: Please take care of yourself. You are very intelligent…self-confident with a great attitude to achieve something in life…I don’t want to lose your positives by getting into health issues because of mental disturbances…I know you want to solve issues on your own without troubling anyone but for that only God in your heart can help and only you can awaken Him for that… through His teachings in the form of scriptures. Absolutely nothing else can help…

The more you start reading gita the more you will assimilate the truth of life…

The more you assimilate the truth of life, the more you will free yourself from the temporary phases of life…

The more you do this. You will realize your true self and stand apart from the crowd…

And when you stand apart from the crowd…and when the self becomes fully sufficient in itself, you would have realized the very purpose of your existence by then…

This is the essence of gita…

That’s how Arjun conquered his mundane self and did his duty as a Kshatriya and the rest everyone knows.

Seeker 2: I am very happy I am able to do something useful for at least person in my life so far…

Seeker 1: <<Laughing>>

Seeker 2: I made you laugh (y)

Seeker 1: Thank you.

Seeker 2: I hope you will laugh more from now on…

Seeker 1: Thank you again!

Seeker 2: Come on :)f

Lord Shri Krishna displaying His Universal Form to Arjuna

Role of women in men’s life according to Vedic Scriptures

It’s very well known that a man’s life is extremely incomplete without a woman/women. He owes his very existence to a woman who bears in her womb for a period of at least nine months, undergoing all sorts of pain and discomfort. A man cannot even simply imagine the pain, strain and agony that a woman undergoes during her time of giving birth to a child. As a mother, a woman plays a critical role in nurturing the infant and is the first teacher. As a child grows up, various women plays different roles accordingly. From a teacher, mentor, peer, friend, colleague to a loving wife.

All of us know this. Nothing new!

But our Vedas and scriptures attach much more significance and more responsibilities to the fairer sex than that what I have mentioned above. I had just mentioned the tip of the ice berg!

The subtle but significant aspects of human life has been stressed throughout our Vedas and Upanishads and expressed more clearly as corollaries in the form of Ithihasas (Ramayana and Mahabharata) and Puranas (Srimad Bhagavatham, Vishnu, Garuda, Padma, Shiva, Skanda etc.).

A typical example is Panchakanya or five ideal women (AhalyaDraupadiKunti / SitaTara  and Mandodari)

Panchakanya

Ahalyā draupadī kunti tārā mandodarī tathā ।
pañcakanyāḥ smarennityaṃ mahāpātakanāśinīḥ ॥

English translation
Ahalya, Draupadi, Kunti, Tara and Mandodari
One should forever remember the panchakanya who are the destroyers of great sins

A variant replaces Sita with Kunti:

ahalyā draupadī sītā tārā mandodarī tathā
pañcakanyāḥ smarennityaṃ mahāpātakanāśinīm

People practicing Sanatana Dharma, especially married ladies, remember the Panchakanya in this daily Morning Prayer.

Their names are extolled and the prayer is pratah smaraniya, prescribed to be recited in the early hours of the morning.

The panchakanya literally means five kanyas. Kanya may be translated as girl, daughter, maiden or virgin.

By the Vedic injunctions, the wife is accepted as the better half of a man’s body because she is assigned the responsibilities of discharging half of the duties of the husband. For a grihastha (for those in the married order of life), the wife is considered to be the source of liberation because she offers her service to the husband for his ultimate liberation. Marriage is actually a duty performed in mutual cooperation for spiritual advancement.

The critical role of a woman as a wife in a man’s life is mentioned directly in Srimad Bhagavatham:

O hero [Vidura], Diti, being thus afflicted by the contamination of lust, and therefore poor and talkative, was pacified by the son of Marīci in suitable words. O afflicted one, I shall forthwith gratify whatever desire is dear to you, for who else but you is the source of the three perfections of liberation? As one can cross over the ocean with seagoing vessels, one can cross the dangerous situation of the material ocean by living with a wife. O respectful one, a wife is so helpful that she is called the better half of a man’s body because of her sharing in all auspicious activities. A man can move without anxiety entrusting all responsibilities to his wife. As a fort commander very easily conquers invading plunderers, by taking shelter of a wife one can conquer the senses, which are unconquerable in the other social orders. O queen of the home, we are not able to act like you, nor could we repay you for what you have done, even if we worked for our entire life or even after death. To repay you is not possible, even for those who are admirers of personal qualities. Even though it is not possible to repay you, I shall satisfy your sex desire immediately for the sake of begetting children. But you must wait for only a few seconds so that others may not reproach me.

Srimad Bhagavatham: Canto 3 – Chapter 14: Pregnancy of Diti in the evening – Verses 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 & 22.

This clearly sums up the phenomenon of material existence in this universe. Human beings gets conditioned by Maya, the illusory energy of the Supreme Lord to transact its activities for existence but gets entangled when they forget the very purpose of life by getting fully absorbed only in the four material activities: eating, sleeping, mating and defending.

Here is an example of an henpecked husband lured by the extreme beauty of the female body and involved in extreme glorification of his wife (though this glorification about one’s wife is an undeniable fact) but he is doing at the wrong time of the day when he should have restrained her – the twilight hours are considered to be period to perform Vedic rites/devotional service and nothing else. Moreover, he is a Rishi and was involved in austere activities at the time. But he was powerless to stop the lusty advances of his wife. Thus by giving vain reasons that would obviously be unacceptable to her in her situation that time, he tries to post pone the act but miserably fails!

Diti was thus informed by her husband, but she was pressed by Cupid for sexual satisfaction. She caught hold of the clothing of the great brāhmaṇa sage, just like a shameless public prostitute. Understanding his wife’s purpose, he was obliged to perform the forbidden act, and thus after offering his obeisances unto worshipable fate, he lay with her in a secluded place.

Srimad Bhagavatham: Canto 3 – Chapter 14: Pregnancy of Diti in the evening – Verses 3031.

The learned Kaśyapa said: Because of your mind’s being polluted, because of defilement of the particular time, because of your negligence of my directions, and because of your being apathetic to the demigods, everything was inauspicious. O haughty one, you will have two contemptuous sons born of your condemned womb. Unlucky woman, they will cause constant lamentation to all the three worlds! They will kill poor, faultless living entities, torture women and enrage the great souls.

Srimad Bhagavatham: Canto 3 – Chapter 14: Pregnancy of Diti in the evening – Verses 38 , 39 & 40.

Thus the two most vicious demons Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu were born because of performing the act at an inappropriate time and not according to scriptural injunctions. The effect of this act is also mentioned in Bhagavad Gita:

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 1 – Observing the Armies on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra – Verse 40

When there is deliberate negligence of the regulative principles of religious life, the women as a class become polluted, and as a result there are unwanted children. When irreligion is prominent in the family, O Krsna, the women of the family become corrupt, and from the degradation of womanhood, O descendant of Vrsni, comes unwanted progeny.

Hence, moderation and restraint in any activity is essential to lead a sane and ideal life.

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 6 – Sankhya Yoga – Verse 16

“There is no possibility of one’s becoming a yogi, O Arjuna, if one eats too much, or eats too little, sleeps too much or does not sleep enough.

Conversation 047 – Believing in oneself

Today’s conversation is with the “other” person (Mr.X in this conversation) that I was mentioning in yesterday’s conversation. He is an extremely self-confident person, who didn’t even attend a regular college (I mean he is a graduate through distance learning, out of his own choice, due to family circumstances that time) and started to work even before he finished his graduation. Through his perseverance over the years, he had been a top performer in all the organizations he worked, achieved a senior management position in a big organization, but lost his employment due to company closure.

Mr.X: Got my previous to previous month salary just today. Last salary with this company will only come at the end of the next month. 😦

Mr.Y: It’s Okay. Thank God! at least you got something for now.

Mr.Y: What about your job now?

Mr.Y: It’s Okay. I have to search.

Mr.Y: Wish you good luck.

Mr.X: What are the kids doing?

Mr.Y: The bigger one is studying. The small just woke up…

Mr.Y: The first kid is really smart and he will pick up at any time.

Mr.X: No one is saying he is not smart. It’s not that easy. Today’s world is so different…. if you don’t get good marks it’s difficult to get a good job or get admission in good college. Our times were different. So it’s better he does not think about anything else except studying…and he is going to be in 10th next year. You please don’t spoil him by talking nonsense and give him overconfidence.

Mr.Y: Yes, I agree. You are correct.

Mr.X: It is not possible to pick up anytime even if you are smart….Hard work will only give results. It’s time for him to put some hard work…Ideally he should have done it from 8th standard itself. 10th marks is very important to get to the group of his choice. I am sure you remember what happened to me…. do you think I am not smart. So hard work is very important…I know I am smarter than him… but that is not enough to get marks…So please teach the right things to kids…I am old enough to have seen enough things in life…Yet I am not successful in life…. so being smart is not enough. I only know what I go through…. but I know I will manage. I don’t need anyone.

Mr.Y: You don’t say you are not successful. I know how much effort you have put in to come to this position in life. So don’t under-estimate yourself.

Mr.X: I said I could have been more successful in life if I had taken studies seriously. Hard work in studies should be their only priority at their age. I never under estimate myself because I know my strengths and weaknesses. I don’t want the kids to suffer like me. Don’t give any mobile phone to the kids

Mr.Y: You know how to come up in life. You are very great in that aspect.

Mr.X: I am stressed because of the job loss. With whom I will show my anger?

Mr.Y: Oh. Did you took medicine? How are you now?

Mr.X: it’s just a viral infection only, given tablets for 3 days…

Mr.Y: Is fever reduced…

Mr.X: Yes feeling better…

Mr.Y: Ok good. Take care.

Mr.X: Fever is not coming down…. went to doctor again last night…they have taken blood test will go in sometime to get the results and see the doctor. Not able to talk because of severe throat pain.

Mr.X: I am not in a good mood because of all these. So I don’t want to talk to anyone for some time. I will be fine. I will take care. Just came back…. doctor said severe viral fever and given medicines for 4 days.

Mr.Y: Oh take care.

Mr.X is staying all alone in a distant place, no family members, no one to take care. He went to the interview with this health condition, did very well and got selected with one of the biggest conglomerates of the country and joined in a very senior management position…

Conversation 046 – Accepting and living within one’s limitations

This is an enigmatic conversation and a somewhat poignant one, involving a software coolie as a protagonist (Mr.Y).

You are free to interpret it in your own way.

Mr.X: I know you are looking for a job very badly. Emailed you one lead for a position as lead software architect in a reputed company. Did you check?

Mr.Y: Saw it da…I don’t think I will fit in that position at this point of time… that’s why I left it like that casually and also I didn’t inform you L. Don’t know why my mind set have changed not to work in these kind of full time positions even though I have the necessary skillset and experience… Don’t know why…probably the frustration has crept me deep inside over the years… the mind set unable to take in all the nonsense going on the corporates over the years and still try to remain normal and neutral … like you.. Probably my mental condition is not handling it, the effect of experiences in all the companies once I crossed 7 to 8 years of my experience…

Mr.Y: And the reasons for quitting in all of them since then…Plus the domestic environment also not very conducive and motivating enough. Plus the layoff and the underemployment over the last 3.5 years…there is just no break to recover…I didn’t want to say all these to you as a reply to your email, but when you asked now, I thought I have to give a satisfactory reply. You know my position more than anyone else since my college days…

Mr.Y: I felt if one has proven limitations it’s better to accept it and live within it and not further aggravate oneself and other’s interests. If there are understanding people around you and there are alternative source of income, it’s okay to take risks…to avoid further harm, but not otherwise.

Mr.Y: I am just trying my best to earn within my limitations a limited income, just enough to support me and the people around me…that itself is a time bomb for the past several years…With instances of layoff for senior positions at the drop of a hat, I am not in a position to take that sort of risk, while undergoing unnecessary undue unfriendly ungrateful employers at this point of time.

Mr.X: I am just reading what you have mentioned and I was in a meeting at the time…

Mr.Y: I could understand that…I was just typing my thoughts… otherwise it will not come other sometime. Leave this and take care of the meeting….These things can be talked more F2F to take decisions but in this world, even close brothers don’t have much time to talk…

Mr.Y: There are many things you are taking it to yourself just like me or anyone else. No one else but the individual can deal with it. Both of us have problems of similar nature…yours is explicit because of direct nature but mine is apparent because everything is subtle…you can’t say which is more damaging…

Mr.Y: The conclusion is both of us have to lead superficial lives. The “other” person has escaped the commitments and is unbound, but no one knows what is going on his mind. Events happening around has just left me emotionless and reactionless to it. People only tends to look at outside (including parents) and no one can understand anything beyond that. It’s the same thing when we deal with others as well. That’s why I am not able to live a life of pretence and that’s not acceptable anywhere. You have to be deceptive and manipulative in corporate world in order to pursue the profession…but I have been unable to…just like monkey trying to jump over random branches around 15 times so far…

Mr.X: Okay, see you. Will call some time.

Do you think the conversation sounds as pessimistic as it looks…or is it the harsh reality/general trend for professionals with 15+ experience in the IT industry…please share your views.

P.S: Mr.X is a very highly optimistic personality, risen to the ranks of a senior software architect by sheer grit and hard work, now working in a highly reputed organization, though he does not possess any professional qualifications (engineering degree).
